Psychotherapist

A psychotherapist is a doctor with a medical degree and a specialisation. They assess both your psychological and your physical state, because they understand how the body and the mind affect each other.

See a psychotherapist if:
  • —anxiety, fears or panic attacks get in the way of your life
  • —a low mood has lasted for weeks, you have lost interest in life and have no energy
  • —your sleep is disturbed (insomnia, early waking, light sleep)
  • —you have psychosomatic symptoms: pain, blood pressure, digestive problems, palpitations that have no other explanation
  • —you have an eating disorder: binge eating, strict restriction, fear of food
  • —you have been through long-term overload, burnout or the aftermath of traumatic events
  • —your condition goes together with chronic illnesses and the treatment needs to be coordinated with other doctors

The doctor can assess the medical causes of the symptoms, order tests and, if needed, offer medication or refer you to the right specialist.

Psychologist

A psychologist is not a doctor. They help you make sense of your thoughts, emotions and behaviour and teach you tools that make life easier. A psychologist does not prescribe medication or treat illnesses.

See a psychologist if:
  • —you feel chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, constant fatigue from the “marathon” of life
  • —you are going through a crisis: a loss, a break-up, a job change, a move, family difficulties
  • —you want to understand yourself, your emotions and reactions better
  • —you find it hard to build relationships, set boundaries, say “no”
  • —you struggle with low self-esteem, self-criticism, perfectionism
  • —you eat your emotions or control food, but have no marked medical symptoms
  • —you need support on the way to change: eating habits, weight, lifestyle

How do I know who to see?

A few questions will help you decide.

Rather a psychotherapist, if:
  • —the symptoms have lasted more than 2 weeks and are not going away
  • —they get in the way of working, sleeping, eating or socialising
  • —you have physical symptoms (palpitations, pain, stomach problems, constant tension) with no clear cause
  • —your sleep or appetite has changed sharply
  • —you have already tried to cope on your own, but nothing gets better
You can start with a psychologist, if:
  • —it is hard, but you are coping with everyday life
  • —you want to understand yourself, reduce stress, improve your relationships or habits
  • —you need a conversation and support without medical symptoms

If you are unsure, that's normal

That is exactly what the 15-minute introductory consultation is for. During it:

  • —you meet one of the clinic's specialists and tell them about yourself
  • —we assess your symptoms: what bothers you, for how long, how it affects your life
  • —we help you understand which specialist you need: a psychotherapist or a psychologist
  • —we outline a strategy: what help you need and where it is best to start

You are not obliged to continue. It is simply a first step to understand where to go next.
